Lama

« Back to Glossary Index

Lama literally means ” supreme mother “. Lama refers to a spiritual master, who is of unsurpassed importance to the practicing student. In the Tibetan tradition, the lama is considered more important even than the Buddha himself, as he is the teacher who brings the teachings into the student’s life. At the absolute level, the lama is our own buddha nature. Relatively, the lama is our personal teacher. However, the term lama is commonly used as a polite form of any monk or spiritual teacher.
