Transmission

« Back to Glossary Index

Often, a qualified lineage master will give a transmission (Tib.: rlung) for a particular teaching by verbally reciting the Tibetan text containing the teaching in the presence of the student. This recitation is typically done after detailed instructions (Tib: tri) have been given; for example, at the end of a retreat. By receiving the transmission, the student is empowered (initiated) in the study and practice of teaching independently.
